Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) is the Flagship of the Military Health System. WRNMMC ensures patient-friendly access to high-quality healthcare for all military service members and their dependents while setting the standard in Readiness, Education, and Research. The Anesthesia Service provides safe, state-of-the-art perioperative care and comprehensive pain management to patients of all ages undergoing various procedures 24/7. Our Anesthesia Service comprises Anesthesiologists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), and numerous Anesthesiologists with subspecialty fellowship training in all of the Anesthesia subspecialties. As the nation's primary casualty receiving medical center, our staff are experts at managing critically ill and injured wounded warriors.

The contracted General Anesthesiologist shall provide the following services in strict compliance with standing orders and protocols set forth by the Military Treatment Facility and guidelines to include, but shall not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • Prepare and review case histories and obtain data through interviews with patients.
  • Provide routine and emergent anesthesia care for neonatal through geriatric patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)classifications I - VI.
  • Provide regional and/or general anesthesia care for subspecialties: general surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiothoracic, vascular, adult dentistry, pediatric dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, podiatry, and dermatology.
  • Administer appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks in treating acute and chronic pain.
  • Provide resuscitative care during a cardiopulmonary arrest and sedation or general anesthetic care at remote locations.
  • Personally provide this care, or they shall collaborate with the simultaneous delivery of anesthesia care by up to four certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs); administer anesthesia in lieu of CRNA to patients whose condition poses a particular anesthetic difficulty.
  • Assist in the activities of the recovery room and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy in the recovery room setting.
  • Implement the proper use of mechanical ventilators in the recovery room and, as necessary, in intensive care units.
  • Interpret test results and evaluate findings.
  • Work under the general professional direction of the Chief of Anesthesiology Services.
  •  Provide consultation services for the hospital staff members for specialty area training purposes. In addition, as required, the contracted healthcare provider shall serve in a teaching capacity to staff members assigned to the hospital and ambulatory clinics.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and receive consultations and laboratory work of specific patients.
  • Shall have documentation of the current Drug Enforcement Agency number.
  • Shall demonstrate skills in interviewing, examining, assessing, and managing patients with general medical and surgical health problems. Seriously ill patients shall be managed in consultation with or by direct referral to specialty physicians.


Qualifications:

  • Degree/Education: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Certifications: Board Certified. Must be a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and participate in the Maintenance of Certification Anesthesia (MOCA) program run by the ABA.
  • Have current BLS and ACLS if required by the client experience.
  • Internship/Residency: Successful completion of an anesthesiology internship and residency program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Committee on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association.
  • Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience as an Anesthesiologist is required.
  • Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Must have or obtain a current, valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number before performing the contract services.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
